Common Questions

  • Mount Meru is 4,562 meters (14,968 feet) tall, making it the second-highest mountain in Tanzania after Kilimanjaro.

  • The trek usually takes 3 to 4 days. The 4-day itinerary is strongly recommended for better acclimatization and a higher summit success rate.

  • Mount Meru is a moderate to challenging trek. It is non-technical (no ropes or climbing gear required), but the summit day is steep, long, and at high altitude, making it demanding.

  • The summit success rate is 70–95% depending on itinerary length. The 4-day trek has the highest success rate, while the 3-day trek is more challenging due to less acclimatization time.

  • No technical climbing skills are required, but a reasonable level of fitness and some hiking experience will make the trek more enjoyable.

  • Unlike Kilimanjaro, trekkers stay in mountain huts (Miriakamba Hut and Saddle Hut). These provide bunk beds and basic facilities, offering more comfort than camping.

  • The best seasons are June to October and December to February (dry seasons). It’s not recommended to climb during the long rains (April–May) or short rains (November).
